Roma Organic
Warm-weather month 2 (winter) to month 6 (summer)
I grew Roma seedlings in peat pots in late winter and planted them in bed B in early autumn.
They initially grew well, but they became infected with blight after a month.
Month 2, week 1 - Roma tomatoes third row on right
Month 3, week 1 - Roma seedlings planted in bed B, first on left. Black Krim in front not infected.
Month 3 ., week 4 - Plants infected with blight.
The Roma seedlings were placed in bed B. However, after a few weeks, they were infected by blight. They were removed, placed in pots and treated with neem oil.
They recovered and were placed in containers in the newly built tomato area. The Roma tomato plants continued to recover and soon had flowers followed by fruit.
Over the next few months, the fruit ripened, providing delicious tomatoes for cooking and being determinate tomatoes soon after their last harvest, the plants died.
Month 5, week 5 - Fruit growing well.
Month 6, week 3 - Delicious Roma tomatoes were produced as the plant neared the end of its life-cydle.
Month 6 - week 5 -Roma tomatoes nearing last harvest of their season.
Roma tomatoes are a member of the Solanaceae family known as a paste, plum, pear, processing, salad or sauce type tomato.
While most Roma tomatoes are red, some varieties produce orange or yellow fruits, which tend to have a slightly milder flavour.
There are also baby Roma varieties similar in shape but much smaller in size, though the plant itself is still comparable in size.
Dwarf Romas, yet another variety, produce elongated fruit that weighs almost three ounces on a dwarf-sized plant that reaches only just over one foot tall.
Today, there are numerous Roma tomato varieties, like sweet orange Roma, yellow Roma, and many more.It is a plum tomato with a very firm texture and is the tomato of choice in Italian dishes.
Roma tomatoes have an elongated egg-like shape, and they grow to about three inches long. Their bright red, smooth and thick skin houses meaty flesh with few seeds, high sugar and acid levels, and low moisture content compared to other tomato varieties, ideal for cooking down into a tomato sauce or paste.
